The Centre for Byzantine Studies was founded in 1966 on the initiative of professors of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Its purpose is the research of Medieval Greek Philology, Byzantine History, Byzantine Archaeology and Art, Byzantine Law, and generally of Byzantine Civilization, as well as the specialization of graduates and the training of researchers in the fields of Byzantine Studies.
According to its founding decree, the Centre for Byzantine Studies fulfills its mission through the organization of research programs, the publication of research findings, collaboration with other scientific institutions in Greece and abroad, the organization of scholarly meetings and conferences, the establishment of a library serving the specialized research needs of the Center, and the publication of its scientific journal BYZANTINA.
The Centre for Byzantine Studies is governed by a five-member Administrative Board. It is structured into five Departments. Since 1998, it has been housed in the neoclassical building “Melissa” on Vasilissis Olgas Street.
